Design Basics--Unity Out Of Chaos
First quarter undergraduates at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale gave me permission to show their compositions from Design Basics. These students plan to major in graphic design, illustration, animation or game art design.
In this "Unity Out Of Chaos" assignment, each student was given a paperclip, a match, a white string, a black string, a letter from the alphabet, a leaf, a newspaper clipping, a button and a bottle cap. Using a minimum of 5 of the objects, they created a Unified colorless composition. They used various design principles, such as: Overlapping, Repetition, Pattern, Closure, Alignments, Grid Systems, Similarities, Containment, Continuity, Balance and Proximity.
